Internship report: Africa my second home …

I have already been in my second home for almost 3 months now: South Africa.
And what is it a beautiful country, where much happens. On my internship I now receive my own clients. I have to speak African. The problems here are fierce: there is a great deal of “substance abuse” among parents, which causes the children to live here and so we have to place a lot of children out of the house. Many young people also use stuff such as alcohol and glu and thereby skip  school. These are a few examples of what we have to deal with on a daily basis.

Hello everyone. Here’s a brief update of our stay in South Africa. We have been in Kimberley for three weeks now. These first three weeks were hectic and full of unexpected moments. We arrived at the house where we stay for the next three months. 17 women with mental disabilities appeared to live here. This was a very pleasant surprise for us. These women find it amazing to have Dutch people in the house and they appreciate it when we give them a “hug” in the morning. This is a ‘drukkie’ in the African language.

Time flies … I’ve seen, heard and experienced a lot here in Ritchie. I am currently studying at the social work office in Ritchie. The only social work place they have here. People walk in for help and come up with fierce stories and things. It is a lot different here then the Netherlands … But they do their work well with the resources and time they have.
